Perspective is an elusive character who is often hard to hold onto with a clear, firm grip. What at first glance appears one way can slowly morph into something quite opposite. Often, this shift is like a whisper. Imperceptible, like the fine mist that hovers over a field one moment and disappears the next with just a touch of sun.

While I used to believe that perspective had everything to do with my eyes and my vision, I now see that it has everything to do with my mindset. The thoughts that swirl through my head determine my perspective. The challenge is to remember that we have the power of choice. We can decide to focus on grace over criticism. We can choose gratitude for ‘what is’ over disappointment from ‘what isn’t’. We can think only of the difficulty of the struggle and exist in that mindset, or we can decide it’s time for something more fulfilling, inspiring and uplifting.

I continue to be surprised by how much effort and energy is required to flex that part of my brain that determines my mindset at any given moment of the day. I have learned how to be aware of the thoughts that trigger a subtle shift in perspective that pull me toward the land of judgment. When I recognize that I’m heading down a dark path, I find gratitude and choose to see all that is working well, all that is good.

I am grateful for my family, both at home and at work.

I am grateful for the friendships I’ve made through cookies.

I am grateful for looking for all that sparkles in this world.

You know that friend who has it all together? Yeah. That’s not me. What I can offer you instead are my experiences, insights, and passions. Pithy observations about making cookies. Wry commentary on running a business. Loving (if slightly sarcastic) parenting advice. And if that doesn’t interest you, I have dogs. Cute ones.
